Pick Ups in Chicago

Last week we ended our trip with all of our pick-ups in Chicago...which normally would have been great, except last week we got there on Saturday. We had 14 pallets to pick-up...and Jeff and I were IT...we had to load our own truck, which only took us 2 1/2 hours, which I thought was pretty impressive. But the best part was our dinner across the street, a Mexican place we have been wanting to try. We were the only ones that were speaking English in the entire place, but we had the best ceviche we have ever had b4.

Who would have thought in Chicago of all places? Stay tuned...this week Florida.

When in Rome...

Rolling through Virginia last night with the several thousand other people escaping hurricane Irene we came across the Virginia Diner. It boasted being the Peanut Capital of the World, how can you not stop to see that?

Had a good dinner, I had crabcakes and Jeff had the buffet, which consisted of many rich foods such as, pulled pork (2 thumbs up), Tilapia (fried), brisket, various  'southern' veggies (fried or soaking in butter) and of course, banana pudding for dessert. The crabcakes were good, but not even close to what I had in Maryland...I guess I'm kind of a crabcakes snob now.  Jeff was very pleased with the buffet, he was asleep in the truck within half an hour. All in all it was nice to stop and have a good meal...which was not at a truck stop.

Bought a bag of peanuts in the shell...haven't tried them yet, but I can vouch for the double-dipped chocolate covered peanuts...they got me all the way to Ohio last night, they were yummy!

Pulling a Reefer with a Split- axle Trailer

One thing that has made this job more challenging is that we now have split rear axles instead if fixed rear axles. This means we can carry more weight on our back end. If we are spread 10 feet apart ( which is the widest you can go) we can carry 20,000 lbs on each axle. At an 8 foot spread, 18,750 lbs, and at 6 feet, 16,000 lbs. The splits allow us to carry more freight, but it also changes our turning radius. We had to learn how to back the trailer differently. No longer can we make tight turns and backing into a tight dock is definitely a bigger challenge than before.

Our reefer unit has two separate motors. This way we can set the front of the trailer to -20 to keep things frozen, then we place a bulkhead in-between the two compartments and set the back unit to about 35. This way we can deliver frozen and chilled product off of the same loaded trailer. We can keep track of both units from the drivers seat side window. There are lights on the panel that tell us what is going on with both reefer units at all times.

We now know how to properly load a trailer with different types of freight. We have to be aware of how much weight we are carrying and how it is distributed in the trailer. As a driver, this is our responsibility to make sure we are loaded correctly and that all if our weights are legal before we hit the Interstate.

Gone are the days of hooking up a loaded trailer, driving 2600+ miles and dropping it in a yard and moving on to the next load, which don't get me wrong, somedays I miss that. But this job is different every week and always a challenge!

Hurricane Irene

We are in Fayetteville, NC with a hurricane soon to hit land tomorrow. We have one more delivery and will be headed back west to Denver by this evening. Kinda windy and cloudy. The humidity is way crazy high. I have attached my crazy 'fro' pic for proof of the humidity. Pretty calm here for now...

Camp Cupcake

Alderson, WV. Delivered to a federal penitentiary...a women's prison. Turns out this is where Martha Stewart did her time. Looked more like a college campus than a prison, it was really pretty.  It has been a women's prison since the late 1700's. The locals affectionately call it Camp Cupcake. Kinda interesting.

Upper State NY/PA

What pretty country...can't wait for fall to see the colors. Driving the last few nights with a full moon has been fantastic. PA, with its rolling hills and the fog that sets in from all of the rivers. I just can't describe how cool it is to see that under a bright moon...

Diversified Transfer/ LTL World

So its been 5 weeks since we started our new job. This is so different than what we did before. Our terminal is in Denver, so we leave out every Sunday and run a route of approx. 5000 - 6000 miles back east...CT, FL or NY so far...all along the way we make deliveries, we haul food now with a reefer (refridge/frozen). Once we make our deliveries, we start picking up product to haul back to Denver where our warehouse re- distributes it to our west coast customers. 4 weeks on, 1 week off. It's been pretty crazy, but I think we might like this....everybody eats food, hard not to run miles when people need to eat. Other commodities may slow down with this economy, but everyone in the world eats!
Our 3 rd week we delivered into Boston...literally right on the water. Neither one of us had ever been there, what a pretty city. Would love to spend more time there.

Posting from my Droid Phone test

Well here is the reason it has been so long for my blogging, my phone wouldn't do it, but I now have an app that will make it work...so let's see how this goes.
